In fall everything turns golden and magical in a way that makes you want to stay forever. The crowds thin out, the light gets softer, and Garmisch somehow becomes even more beautiful than it already was.

The views from the top on a clear day are absolutely indescribable — you can see into four countries simultaneously: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy.

Our daughter was completely speechless at the top. We all were.

PRO TIP: Go early in the morning for the best chance of clear skies and to beat the crowds. The light is also better for photos in the morning.

WINTER TIP: In winter the summit is a ski area with slopes for all levels. Taking the cable car up and skiing back down is an experience unlike anything else in Germany.

Summer in Garmisch is something out of a dream. The meadows surrounding the town explode with wildflowers in every color. The hiking trails through the Alps are accessible to all fitness levels. The rivers run crystal clear with snowmelt. And the long summer evenings mean you can spend hours just sitting somewhere beautiful doing absolutely nothing.

• Cycling — rent bikes in town and cycle through the valley. Incredibly scenic and very family friendly

SUMMER TIP: Summer weekends in Garmisch get busy with Munich day-trippers. If you can visit on a weekday you’ll have the trails and viewpoints much more to yourself.

Garmisch in Winter — A Bavarian Snow Globe

We have visited Garmisch in winter and the only word for it is magical.

Snow-covered Alpine peaks surrounding a traditional Bavarian town with painted facades and flower boxes (now covered in snow). Christmas markets in the town square. The smell of Glühwein and roasted chestnuts drifting through the cold air. Horses pulling sleighs through the streets.

It is genuinely one of the most beautiful winter scenes in Europe.

WINTER TIP: Garmisch gets serious snow — pack proper winter boots, warm layers, and snow gear for the kids. The weather can change quickly in the mountains.

• Käsespätzle — Bavarian cheese noodles. Kids go absolutely crazy for this dish
• Apfelstrudel — warm apple strudel with vanilla sauce. Order it everywhere
• Bavarian beer — obviously. The local beer gardens are an experience in themselves
• Milchkaffee and hot chocolate — warming up in a cozy Bavarian cafe after a mountain morning is one of life’s great pleasures
