Not because we planned to. But because when you’re standing in front of hundreds of the most stunning, unusual, and genuinely beautiful pumpkins you’ve ever seen in your life, at prices that honestly make no sense for how gorgeous they are, you buy more than you can carry. Every single time.

That’s the Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival. And we went back year after year during our six years living in the Kaiserslautern area, and it never got old.

If you’re stationed in Germany, planning a fall trip to Europe, or looking for the most spectacular autumn experience on the continent, this is it. Nothing comes close.

What Is the Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival?

The Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival is the world’s largest event dedicated to pumpkins, transforming the grounds of Ludwigsburg Palace into a spectacular harvest celebration every fall. About 450,000 to 500,000 pumpkins representing more than 600 different varieties from all over the world are on display, becoming the material for creating amazing art objects, giant sculptures, and entire themed installations.

The festival began in 1997 and moved to the grounds of Ludwigsburg Castle in 2000. The sculptures have a wood-and-wire base, and the pumpkins, primarily sourced from local Ludwigsburg farmers, are attached with zip ties and wire to create the finished pieces.

Every year has a different theme, which means every visit feels completely fresh. We went multiple times during our years in Germany and the theme changed everything. One year it was fairy tales. Another year it was world landmarks. The 2026 theme is Let’s Play, so you will see Barbie, Super Mario, and even a good old-fashioned rocking horse recreated entirely in pumpkins.

The setting alone would make it worth visiting. Ludwigsburg Palace is one of the largest and most beautiful Baroque palaces in Europe, and the manicured gardens surrounding it become something else entirely when filled with nearly half a million pumpkins in every color, shape, and size imaginable.

Ludwigsburg Palace: Worth Exploring Beyond the Festival

While you’re there for the pumpkins, don’t overlook the palace itself.

Ludwigsburg Palace is one of the largest and best-preserved Baroque palaces in Europe, built between 1704 and 1733 for Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg. With 452 rooms across 18 buildings, it’s often called the “Versailles of Swabia” and the comparison is genuinely apt. The architecture, the painted ceilings, the formal gardens and the sheer scale of the complex are breathtaking.

Palace tours are available in English and well worth the extra time. The Baroque gardens surrounding the palace are part of what makes the pumpkin festival so visually stunning and they deserve to be appreciated on their own terms too.

If you’re visiting with kids, the Märchengarten, a fairy tale garden within the palace grounds, is a wonderful add-on that makes the whole day feel even more complete.

2026 Festival Dates + Tickets

The 2026 Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival runs August 22 through November 1 for the daytime exhibition. Starting October 24 through December 7 the festival transforms into Dream Trails, an illuminated evening experience where the pathways through the pumpkin gardens are lit from dusk until 9:30pm, creating a genuinely magical atmosphere.

The festival is open from 9am to 8:30pm seven days a week.

Adult tickets are 13 to 14 euros when purchased online. Children aged 4 to 14 are 6 euros. Family ticket options are available. Dream Trails evening tickets are priced separately at 14.50 euros for adults and 7 euros for children.

Buy tickets online before you go. It saves time at the gate and sometimes gets you a small discount.

The Food: Pumpkin Everything

This is where the Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival completely wins.

We are self-confessed fall food lovers, and the festival food is one of the main reasons we kept going back year after year. Pumpkin flavored everything. And we mean everything.

Classic pumpkin soup. Pumpkin waffles. Maultaschen, a traditional German dish similar to ravioli, in pumpkin flavor. Pumpkin strudel. Pumpkin ice cream. Pumpkin prosecco. Roasted pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin spaetzle.

And yes, there is a pumpkin bratwurst. It sounds like it shouldn’t work and it absolutely does. That’s the kind of discovery that makes you feel like you found something nobody else knows about, even though you’re surrounded by thousands of people who found it too.

Come very hungry. This is not a festival where you eat a snack and move on. This is a festival where you plan your meals around the food stalls and go back for seconds.

One tip from years of experience: arrive early. By 11:30am the lines for food get quite long. Get there around 9am, eat early, and you’ll have your pick of everything with no wait and plenty of seating.

The Pumpkins to Buy

This is the part nobody warns you about.

The pumpkins available for purchase at the festival are stunning. Unusual varieties in colors and shapes you have genuinely never seen before, at prices that are remarkably affordable for how beautiful they are. We never planned to buy pumpkins. We always bought pumpkins. Hence the wagon.

Bring a wagon, a large bag, or a very patient travel companion willing to carry things. You will thank yourself later.

You can also purchase artistically carved pumpkin lanterns that are works of art in their own right. Beautiful, completely unique, and genuinely unforgettable souvenirs.

The Festival Activities

Beyond the sculptures and the food, the Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival has a full calendar of events throughout the season.

The Pumpkin Regatta On Saturday September 19 and Sunday September 20, 2026, brave souls compete in a canoeing competition using enormous hollowed-out pumpkins. We watched this once and it’s exactly as chaotic and wonderful as it sounds. Highly recommend timing your visit to catch it.

The Pumpkin Weigh-Off Farmers from all over Europe compete in two categories: European Pumpkin and German Pumpkin. The Ludwigsburg festival actually set a world record in 2016 when a pumpkin weighing 1,190.5 kg was registered. Seeing the giant competition pumpkins in person is genuinely wild.

The Pumpkin Smash On the last day of the festival the winning pumpkin is ceremoniously smashed, and anyone there can receive a few seeds of the giant as a souvenir. A quirky and memorable way to close out the season.

Halloween Pumpkin Carving Pumpkin carving for everyone on October 24, 25, and 31. A great activity for families visiting during the Halloween season.

Storytelling and Kids Activities Storytelling sessions, a little chamber of horrors, games, and more specially designed activities for little ones are spread throughout the festival grounds. It’s genuinely wonderful for families with children of all ages.

What to Buy at the Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival

Fresh pumpkins The obvious one and the best one. The variety is extraordinary and the prices are genuinely reasonable. Bring something to carry them in. This is the voice of experience.

Carved pumpkin lanterns Artisans carve pumpkins on-site throughout the festival and the finished lanterns are breathtaking. A completely unique souvenir you won’t find anywhere else.

Pumpkin seeds Packets of seeds from unusual varieties weigh almost nothing in your bag and are a lovely way to bring a piece of the festival home.

Local food products Pumpkin oils, pumpkin jams, and other local German specialty products are sold throughout the festival grounds. Pumpkin seed oil in particular is something most Americans have never tried and makes a wonderful gift.

What to Eat at the Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival

Pumpkin soup. The classic and the one everyone should try first. Pumpkin bratwurst. Yes it’s real, yes it’s wonderful, yes order it immediately. Maultaschen. Traditional German pasta pockets in pumpkin flavor. Pumpkin waffles. Sweet, warm, and perfect with a coffee. Pumpkin strudel. A festival-worthy dessert. Pumpkin ice cream. Even better than it sounds. Pumpkin prosecco. A sparkling wine with pumpkin notes that works surprisingly well. Roasted pumpkin seeds. The perfect snack while wandering the sculptures.

Getting To + Around Ludwigsburg

From the Kaiserslautern area: For military families in the KMC area as we were, Ludwigsburg is just under a two hour drive south via the A6 and A81. It’s an easy and very worthwhile day trip. The US Army MWR in Kaiserslautern also regularly runs organized day trips to the festival which is a great option if you don’t want to drive yourself.

From Stuttgart: Ludwigsburg is just 12 kilometers from Stuttgart, about a 30 minute drive. The train connection from Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof is fast and very easy, with about a 10 to 15 minute walk from Ludwigsburg Hauptbahnhof to the palace gates.

Parking: Arriving early makes parking significantly easier. Street parking is available but fills up quickly on weekends. A nearby parking garage with a short walk is the most reliable option.

Getting around the festival: The festival grounds are large and very walkable. Comfortable shoes are essential. The paths are generally barrier-free, though a few steeper stretches may require assistance for wheelchair users.

Practical Tips for the Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival

Arrive early. We cannot say this enough. The experience at 9am and the experience at 2pm are completely different. Early arrival means shorter food lines, better photo opportunities, and more peaceful wandering through the sculptures.

Bring a wagon or large bags. If you plan to buy pumpkins, bring something to carry them in. You will buy more than you expect. Every single time.

Go on a weekday if possible. Weekday visits are significantly more peaceful and you can take your time without fighting crowds. Weekend days, especially in October, can get very busy.

Bring cash. Many German festivals and food stalls prefer cash. Having euros on hand makes everything smoother.

Dress in layers. Fall weather in Baden-Württemberg can shift from warm sunshine to chilly wind within hours. Layers are essential, especially if you’re staying for Dream Trails in the evening.

Stay for Dream Trails if you can. The illuminated evening experience starting late October is genuinely one of the most magical things we’ve experienced in Germany. Completely different atmosphere from the daytime visit and absolutely worth it.

Combine with a Stuttgart visit. Since Ludwigsburg is only 30 minutes from Stuttgart, combining the festival with a day or overnight in the city makes for a wonderful extended trip.

The kind where you pull up the route and think… wait, is this actually going to be good? And then you get there and realize it’s one of the best days you’ve had in a while.

This Kentucky route was exactly that. Punkyville, Pig Out Pizza, and Augusta, Kentucky. Three stops that have absolutely no business being this good, on a route that took us less than two hours from Dayton to reach.

If you’re looking for something completely different from your usual Ohio day trip, this is it.

The Route at a Glance

Start: Dayton, Ohio Stop 1: Punkyville, Falmouth, Kentucky Stop 2: Pig Out Pizza, Butler, Kentucky Stop 3: Augusta, Kentucky Total Drive Time: About 1.5 to 2 hours from Dayton to first stop

The whole route runs along US-27 South, which is one of those beautiful Kentucky backroads that makes the drive part of the experience. Rolling hills, small towns, farms. It doesn’t feel like a commute. It feels like a road trip.

Stop 1: Punkyville, Falmouth Kentucky

I didn’t know what to expect from Punkyville. The name alone was enough to make me curious.

What we found was genuinely one of the most unique roadside stops I’ve ever visited. And I’ve traveled to 27 countries. Punkyville is a miniature town built entirely from repurposed materials, antiques, and collected junk by a man named Charles “Punky” Beckett, who started the project in 2003 when he ran out of room for his collection.

Instead of putting everything in a generic storage building, he built a whole little town. A gas station, a dentist’s office, a hotel, a jail, a post office, a bank, and a hardware store. Inside each building are treasures associated with it. The train caboose is filled with train memorabilia and tools used on the railroad.

Punky passed away in 2021, but his wife Joyce and daughter Amy have kept Punkyville open to the public. It’s become a favorite stop for bikers and road-trippers. People have even gotten married in Punkyville’s little one-room church.

Walking through it felt like stepping into someone’s lifelong love letter to history and collecting. Every building had a different feel, a different story, a different collection of things that made you stop and look closer. My Anthropology background made this one extra special. There is something so genuinely human about the impulse to collect, preserve, and share.

• Not a polished tourist attraction. That’s entirely the point.
• Call ahead or check their Facebook page to confirm current hours before visiting

Stop 2: Pig Out Pizza, Butler Kentucky

After Punkyville we were hungry, and Pig Out Pizza did not disappoint.

This place is tucked along US-27 in Butler, Kentucky, and from the outside it looks like a simple roadside pizza spot. Then you walk in and realize it also has an antique shop inside, which is honestly very on-brand for this whole route.

From the moment you walk in, it feels like stepping back to a simpler time. Real ingredients, made with care, and a warm friendly atmosphere that’s hard to find everywhere anymore. The deep dish is everything you want it to be. Thick, cheesy, flavorful, and perfectly baked.

The menu highlights include buffalo chicken hoagie, BBQ chicken pizza, wings, loaded pigtail fries, and the signature Pig Out pizza. There’s also outdoor seating with a playground for the kids, and that antique shop on the property adds a fun surprise while you wait for your food.

We ordered the Pig Out Pizza and I’m still thinking about it. The portions are generous, the atmosphere is completely unpretentious, and eating great pizza while browsing antiques is exactly the kind of detail that makes a stop memorable.

Stop 3: Augusta, Kentucky

Augusta was the stop I was least sure about going in and the one I loved the most coming out.

This tiny Kentucky town sits on a soft bend in the Ohio River, about 40 miles east of Covington, and it has a kind of quiet, unhurried beauty that honestly reminded me of the small European river towns we visited during our years living in Germany. Cobblestone streets, historic architecture, the Ohio River stretching out in front of you. It has a feeling that’s hard to describe until you’re standing in it.

Augusta is home to whimsical small-town shops, local eateries, and B&Bs, and it also happens to be the site of the oldest and largest wine cellar in America. An impressive stone structure that survived a Civil War battle. History is literally built into the streets here.

Downtown Augusta feels like stepping onto a movie set where golf carts share the road with cars and time moves at its own gentle pace. We walked Riverside Drive slowly, watched the boats move down the Ohio River, and wandered in and out of the local shops.

Things to Do in Augusta Kentucky

Augusta Ferry

One of the most charming discoveries in Augusta is the ferry that still crosses the Ohio River. It has been running since 1798. That’s not a typo. This little ferry has been carrying people across the river for over 200 years and is one of the oldest continuously operating ferries in the country. Even if you don’t cross, watching it move across the water from Riverside Drive is one of those quietly memorable moments that Augusta does so well.

The Caboose Welcome Center

Right along the riverfront sits a genuine restored railroad caboose serving as Augusta’s welcome center. It’s worth stopping in for local maps, information, and just because a caboose welcome center is completely delightful. A great first stop when you arrive to get your bearings.

The Book Tavern

For the book lovers, Augusta has its own independent bookstore and it’s exactly what you’d hope for in a town this charming. The Book Tavern is a cozy, well-curated shop that feels completely at home in Augusta’s historic downtown. Browse slowly, find something unexpected, and appreciate that a town this small has a bookstore this good.

Baker-Bird Winery and Distillery

Augusta is home to the oldest and largest wine cellar in America. An impressive stone structure that survived a Civil War battle and is still operating today. Baker-Bird Winery offers tastings of their wines including bourbon barrel-aged varieties. The distillery side offers bourbon tours with Ohio River views. If you’re a wine or bourbon lover, this is a non-negotiable stop.

Augusta, Kentucky

Rosemary Clooney House

Augusta has a Hollywood connection most people don’t know about. It’s the hometown of legendary actress and singer Rosemary Clooney, aunt of George Clooney. The Rosemary Clooney House is a museum dedicated to her life and career, filled with memorabilia, costumes, and the story of one of Hollywood’s most beloved entertainers. A genuinely surprising and wonderful find in such a small town.

Augusta, Kentucky

Nina Clooney’s Shop

Speaking of the Clooney connection, Nina Clooney’s shop in downtown Augusta is a fun little find with antiques, memorabilia, and a touch of Hollywood mixed in. Worth a browse if you’re already wandering the downtown shops.

The 1811 Historic Jail

Augusta’s 1811 Historic Jail is one of those stops that makes you appreciate how much history is packed into this tiny town. One of the oldest surviving jails in Kentucky, it’s a fascinating piece of local history right in the heart of downtown.

John Parker House

John Parker was a formerly enslaved man who became a successful businessman, inventor, and Underground Railroad conductor, helping hundreds of freedom seekers cross the Ohio River to freedom. His house in Ripley, Ohio, just across the river from Augusta, is a National Historic Landmark. The Augusta area’s connection to the Underground Railroad is a genuinely moving piece of American history worth knowing about.

Knoedler Memorial Library

Augusta’s charming historic library is worth a stop for architecture lovers. A beautiful small-town library that feels completely in keeping with the rest of Augusta’s historic character.

Stay for the Sunset

If you can time your visit to stay for sunset, do it. Augusta is known for having one of the best unobstructed sunset views in this part of the country. All those shades of purple, pink, and gold over the Ohio River with tree-covered hills on the opposite bank and not a single city light in the way. It was one of those moments that made me feel genuinely grateful to live close enough to places like this.

Tips for This Kentucky Day Trip from Dayton

Start early. Leave Dayton mid-morning for perfect pacing. Punkyville first, lunch at Pig Out Pizza, then a long slow afternoon in Augusta. If you want to stay for sunset, give yourself until at least 7-8pm.

Bring cash. Pig Out Pizza takes cards, but smaller stops along this route and the antique shops are easier with cash on hand.

Drive US-27 South the whole way. It’s slightly slower than highway driving but significantly more beautiful. The Kentucky backroads on this route are part of the experience.

This route is stunning in fall. The hills along US-27 turn gorgeous when the leaves change, and Augusta in October is something else entirely. Already planning a return trip.

Augusta is very walkable. Park once on Riverside Drive and explore everything on foot. The ferry, the shops, the winery, the bookstore, the historic sites are all within easy walking distance of each other.

This Kentucky route surprised us in the best way.

Punkyville is the kind of place that reminds you why you go looking for the off-the-beaten-path stops in the first place. Pig Out Pizza is the kind of meal you talk about on the drive home. And Augusta is the kind of town you start planning to come back to before you’ve even left.

Start Your Morning: Taylor’s Coffee & Creamery

Before you do anything else, start at Taylor’s Coffee & Creamery on Main Street.

This women-owned shop opened in downtown Waynesville and quickly became one of the most beloved spots in town — and it’s easy to see why. Taylor’s partners with Kava Haus, a local Ohio roaster out of Wilmington and Xenia, for a full espresso bar with lattes, mochas, flat whites, and drip coffee. Add in donuts, baked goods, and ice cream all under one roof and you have the perfect slow morning start before a full day of wandering.

Pro tip: Go early, grab your coffee, and take a slow walk down Main Street before the shops open. The town has a completely different energy in the morning quiet.

The Main Event: Antique Shopping on Main Street

Waynesville has earned the title “Antique Capital of the Midwest” — and with over 70 antique shops lining Main Street and the surrounding blocks, it lives up to the name completely.

This is not a place to rush. Plan to spend at least two to three hours just wandering, browsing, and seeing what catches your eye. The variety is genuinely impressive — furniture, vintage clothing, collectibles, jewelry, stained glass, home decor, handmade crafts, and things you couldn’t categorize if you tried.

A few shops worth knowing:

Lilly’s Corner Mall — A beloved family-owned antique mall that’s been a Waynesville fixture since the 1960s. Over 7,000 square feet of antiques, collectibles, stained glass, and home finds at 105 S. Main Street. This one alone could take an hour.

Waynesville Antique Mall — One of the most well-organized shops in town with a wide variety of items across booths. Furniture pieces at good prices and pleasant staff who actually know their inventory.

Annie’s Place — A Waynesville favorite with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The owner Ann has a reputation for genuinely helping people find what they’re looking for. The kind of antique shop that feels like visiting a friend.

Canada Goose Gallery — If you love wildlife art, this is a must-stop. One of the most well-known galleries in the area.

Shopping tip: Don’t just stay on Main Street. Wander down High Street, Miami Street, and into Scioto Square — some of the best shops are tucked just off the main drag and easy to miss if you’re not paying attention.

Lunch: Hammel House Inn or Stone House Tavern

After a morning of browsing you’ll be ready to sit down, and Waynesville has two excellent options depending on your mood.

Hammel House Inn is the historic choice — a Waynesville landmark with classic down-home cooking in a building that’s been part of the town’s story for generations. If you want comfort food with genuine local character, this is your spot.

Stone House Tavern is great for well-cooked meals, appetizers, sandwiches, and a more relaxed atmosphere. A local favorite that consistently gets good reviews for food and service.

Either way, eat well. You’re going to need the energy for everything else on this list.

Wander Through: The Secret Garden

Just outside downtown, on SR-73 between Waynesville and Springboro, sits one of the most charming stops on this whole list.

The Secret Garden is a nature-inspired garden shop that’s part retail, part outdoor wonderland — think garden ornaments, fountains, birdhouses, and one-of-a-kind art from local and national artists, all set across grounds that are just as fun to wander as they are to shop. It’s been family-owned since 2004, and it shows in the care put into every corner of the property.

If you visit in fall, don’t miss the Spook House tucked into the garden with Halloween and seasonal finds, and the top of the barn houses a year-round Christmas Shop if you want a preview of the holidays no matter when you go.

Don’t Miss: Museum at the Friends Home

This one surprises people and it’s worth building into your day.

The Museum at the Friends Home offers a fascinating look into the Quaker history that shaped Waynesville — because Waynesville was actually founded by Quakers before Ohio even became a state. Three floors of exhibits covering local history, Quaker life and legacy, and the region’s heritage from the late 1800s through the mid-twentieth century.

The underground railroad walking tours offered by the museum are particularly special — Waynesville has a significant connection to the Underground Railroad and the guided tour brings that history to life in a way that’s genuinely moving. My Anthropology background makes stops like this ones I always want to linger in.

Outdoor Adventure: Caesar Creek State Park

Just a short drive from downtown Waynesville sits one of the best state parks in southwestern Ohio.

Caesar Creek State Park covers over 7,500 acres and surrounds a large reservoir that’s perfect for boating, kayaking, fishing, and swimming. The hiking trails wind through forests and along the water’s edge with scenic views at nearly every turn. Birdwatchers will find over 230 species in the reserve — and one of the most unique features of the park is the fossil beds along the creek, where visitors can actually find marine fossils dating back hundreds of millions of years.

RiversEdge Canoe & Kayak Outfitters is located nearby if you want to get out on the water without hauling your own gear. A summer afternoon kayaking on Caesar Creek with the trees on both banks is exactly the kind of Ohio experience that makes you wonder why you ever look elsewhere.

The Little Miami Scenic Trail also runs through the area — nearly 80 miles of paved trail and one of the longest in the country, perfect for a bike ride or a long walk along what’s been designated a National Wild and Scenic River.

Plan Around This: The Ohio Sauerkraut Festival

If you haven’t been to the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival, it needs to go on your bucket list immediately.

Held every October in downtown Waynesville, the Sauerkraut Festival is one of the most beloved community events in Ohio — and one of the most unique. It started in 1970 when Waynesville merchants decided to hold a simple sidewalk sale and serve sauerkraut dinners to draw a crowd. That first year, 1,500 visitors showed up. Today it draws hundreds of thousands.

Around 460 craft vendors from over 25 states line the streets with handmade goods. Nearly 60 food items are available — sauerkraut pizza, sauerkraut donuts, sauerkraut fudge (yes, really), plus plenty of non-sauerkraut options for the skeptics in your group. Live entertainment, community energy, and the full fall atmosphere of Waynesville in October make this one of the best weekends in Ohio.

2026 Sauerkraut Festival dates: October 10 (9am–8pm) and October 11 (9am–6pm)

Pro tip: Arrive early. The streets fill up fast and parking becomes a project by mid-morning. The best time to actually see the shops is right when things open — before the vendor tents take over Main Street.

Waynesville Trade Days — A regular antique and flea market event that draws dealers and collectors from across the region. If you love the shopping energy of the Sauerkraut Festival but want it on a smaller scale, Trade Days is worth checking out.

Ghost + History Walking Tours — Offered through the Museum at the Friends Home. Waynesville has a reputation as one of the most haunted small towns in Ohio, and the walking tours cover both the history and the ghost stories. A great fall evening activity.

Stone House Sweets Bakery Cafe — For an afternoon treat or a sweet finish to your day. Local baked goods in a cozy setting.

The Pioneer Village at Caesar Creek — A living history museum within the state park with a collection of Ohio artifacts and historic structures. Worth a stop if history and culture are your thing.

 Ohio Renaissance Festival — A full 30-acre Renaissance village with 150+ shops and stage shows, running weekends from late August through October 31, right on the same SR-73 corridor as everything else on this list.

Waynesville Street Faire — A monthly outdoor market in downtown Waynesville, plus a dedicated Christmas Market version each December — good for anyone who wants that shopping energy outside of Sauerkraut Festival weekend.

Tips for Your Waynesville Day Trip

Go on a weekday if you can. Weekend crowds in Waynesville can be significant, especially during festival season. A weekday visit means easier parking, less crowded shops, and more time to actually talk to the shop owners — which is where a lot of the best stories come from.

Wear comfortable shoes. You will walk more than you expect. The town is wonderfully walkable but the blocks add up, especially once you start ducking into every shop that catches your eye.

Bring cash. Many of the antique shops and smaller vendors prefer cash. There’s an ATM downtown but having cash on hand from the start makes everything easier.

Check the event calendar before you go. Waynesville has something happening almost every month — trade days, seasonal festivals, ghost tours, and community events. Timing your visit around an event adds a whole extra layer to the day.

Plan for at least a half day, ideally a full one. Waynesville rewards slow travel. The people who rush through in two hours always wish they’d stayed longer.

Before Fall Even Officially Starts: Sunflower Season

Maize Valley Winery Sunflower Festival — Hartville, Ohio

August 22 + August 29, 2026

This is technically still summer but it absolutely counts as the start of the fall season for me — and it’s one of the most beautiful events in Ohio.

Maize Valley Winery in Hartville turns their grounds into a sunflower paradise every late August, with acres of sunflowers, wine tastings, live music, food, and the kind of golden late-summer atmosphere that makes you want to stay all afternoon. Two dates this year — August 22 and August 29. Pick your weekend and go early for the best light.

Hidden Valley Orchards Sunflower U-Pick — Lebanon, Ohio

September 2026

Hidden Valley Orchards at 5474 N State Route 48 in Lebanon has a Sunflower Field at the top of the hill with U-Pick sunflowers open every September. It’s not a standalone festival — it’s a U-Pick experience right on the farm, which is honestly even better. Stroll through fields of golden blooms and bring home your favorite stems for a perfect seasonal bouquet. Combine with the cidery, fresh baked goods, live music nights, and the apple orchard all in the same visit.

German Season: Oktoberfest + Germanfest

Dayton kicks off the German festival season every August with Germanfest — and as someone who spent six years living in Germany, I have a lot of feelings about a good German festival. Real German food, great beer, live music, and a community that genuinely leans into the Gemütlichkeit energy that makes these events so special.

Three days in August, right in our backyard. This is always worth clearing the calendar for.

August 14–16, 2026 Dayton, Ohio

Schmidt’s Columbus Oktoberfest — Columbus, Ohio

September 11–13, 2026

Schmidt’s has been a Columbus institution for 140 years — and their Oktoberfest at the Ohio Expo Center is one of the biggest German festivals in the Midwest.

Three stages of German music and polka dancing. A Marktplatz with 100+ vendors. Beer halls, a wine garden, and the famous Schmidt’s menu — bratwursts, Bahama Mamas, German potato salad, sauerkraut balls, deep fried Reubens on a stick, and the legendary Jumbo Cream Puffs that people drive from hours away just to eat.

Kids have the Kinderplatz with bounce rides, crafts, and face painting. And this year there’s a special Sunday Family Funday on September 13 featuring character appearances from Bluey, Blippi, Sponge Bob, Paw Patrol, and more.

October: The Month We’ve All Been Waiting For

Ohio Sauerkraut Festival — Waynesville, Ohio

October 10–11, 2026

The one, the only, the most uniquely Ohio festival in existence.

460+ craft vendors, nearly 60 food items all featuring sauerkraut in some form — Reubens, sauerkraut pizza, sauerkraut burritos, sauerkraut mac and cheese, sauerkraut fudge (yes, really, try it) — live entertainment, and the full fall atmosphere of Waynesville’s beautiful downtown.

This festival draws hundreds of thousands of visitors every year for a very good reason. It’s joyful, it’s community-driven, and it’s completely one of a kind.

Conner Prairie Headless Horseman Festival — Fishers, Indiana

October 1–25, 2026 (Thursdays–Sundays)

A little further but absolutely worth the drive.

We went last year and I’ve been talking about it ever since. Over 40 years of fall tradition at Conner Prairie — a 13.6-acre corn maze, a haunted Trail of Terror, the Sleepy Hollow one-man show, a hayride through the dark, axe throwing, a barrel train through the pumpkin patch, and the famous Headless Horseman himself riding through in the evening.

It’s family-friendly without being low-energy — the atmosphere after dark is genuinely thrilling and the caramel apples from the Apple Store are something I’ve been thinking about since October 2025.

Circleville Pumpkin Show — Circleville, Ohio

October 21–24, 2026

“The Greatest Free Show on Earth” — and they mean it.

The Circleville Pumpkin Show has been running since 1903 and draws over 400,000 visitors to a small Pickaway County town every October. Four days of parades (seven of them total, including the Pumpkin Parade, Pet Parade, and Baby Parade), the world’s largest pumpkin pie, a pumpkin toss, pie-eating competition, hog calling, egg toss, pumpkin carving, 400+ food booths, arts and crafts, and every pumpkin-flavored food you can imagine.

Oh — and admission is completely free.

You’ll recognize Circleville before you even see the signs because the water tower is painted like a pumpkin, stem and all. It’s that kind of town in October.

Schappacher Farms — Wilmington, Ohio

This family-owned farm on 50 acres in Wilmington is exactly the kind of hidden gem the Ohio Hidden Gems group exists to share. Six pumpkin patches with a huge variety of specialty pumpkins, gourds, and squash. Free hayrides on weekends. A corn maze, a petting pen, fresh apple cider, hand-dipped caramel apples, and mini apple spice donuts. Oh — and a barn built in the mid-1800s that’s worth seeing on its own.

Martha Stewart recognized it as one of the top outdoor vintage markets in the country — and once you’ve been, you’ll understand exactly why.

Fleur de Flea takes place twice a year on the Louisville Waterfront Plaza right along the Ohio River. Over 200 curated vendors selling antiques, vintage clothing, vinyl, collectibles, repurposed furniture, handmade goods, and the kind of finds that don’t exist anywhere else. Food trucks, pop-up bars, DJs, and the gorgeous river backdrop make it a full afternoon out — not just a shopping trip.

Start planning now. The best fall weekends in Ohio fill up fast — Sauerkraut Festival and Circleville Pumpkin Show especially draw massive crowds and nearby hotels book out weeks ahead.

Check dates early. Several of these events have specific weekend dates that vary year to year. Bookmark the official websites and check before you build your calendar.

Combine events into day trips. The Sauerkraut Festival pairs perfectly with a Waynesville antique morning. Circleville is a short drive from Columbus German Village. Schmidt’s Oktoberfest pairs with a German Village afternoon. The whole fall season is one big connected itinerary if you plan it right.

Book Conner Prairie early. Hayride slots sell out weeks in advance for October dates. Don’t wait.

Antiques Village — Dayton (Centerville)

The biggest antique mall in the Greater Dayton area — and it earns the title.

With over 80,000 square feet of space and more than 350 unique vendors, Antiques Village is one of the largest antique malls in the region. The impressive stone exterior gives you a hint of what’s inside, but nothing truly prepares you for the wonderland of vintage treasures awaiting beyond those doors. Each booth has its own character and specialties — it’s essentially like visiting dozens of curated antique shops under a single roof.

Furniture, vintage glassware, vinyl records, collectibles, clothing, art, kitchenware — if it exists in antique form, Antiques Village probably has it. Budget extra time. You will need it.

Waynesville Antique Shops — Waynesville, Ohio

The Antique Capital of the Midwest — and it lives up to the name.

Waynesville deserves its own section because it’s not one shop — it’s an entire town of them.

The Scarlet Barn — A 120-plus year old barn specializing in antiques and collectibles. The nearly 2,000 square foot barn boasts two floors of antique furniture and collectibles including Military Surplus, Star Wars and other collectible toys, and several curio cabinets full of smaller vintage finds. The barn itself is worth the visit for the atmosphere alone.

Lilly’s Corner Mall — A 7,000 square foot antique mall featuring 30 vendors with an abundance of unique styles — antique and vintage furniture, collectibles, home décor, candles, soaps, and an abundance of interesting and unusual small décor items from the past. One of Waynesville’s most beloved stops.

Waynesville Antique Mall — A well-organized multi-dealer shop with wide variety covering furniture, jewelry, vintage clothing, and collectibles at consistently good prices.

The town of Urbana is charming enough to make the drive feel worthwhile even before you find anything.

The Big Event: Springfield Antique Extravaganza

This one deserves its own category entirely.

Ranked one of America’s Best Flea Markets by CNN, Country Living, and Fodor’s, the Springfield Antique Extravaganza is a world-class event drawing 20,000+ shoppers from all 50 states to the Clark County Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ohio. Over 2,000 vendors spread across a dozen buildings and the full outdoor grounds — and it’s been going strong for over 40 years.

The big Extravaganzas in May and September run three full days and bring out the most vendors and the most serious collectors. Monthly shows run on the third weekend most other months year-round.

Wear comfortable shoes and arrive during early-bird hours on Friday — that’s when the best pieces move.

Because here’s the thing about Garmisch that most travel guides won’t tell you — it’s a completely different place depending on when you visit. And every single version of it is breathtaking.

In winter the Partnachklamm gorge freezes over into something that looks completely unreal — walls of ice towering above you as you walk through the canyon. The Eibsee lake turns into a mirror of frozen turquoise perfection with the Zugspitze reflected above it. We stood there in silence because honestly words didn’t work.

In spring and summer the Alpine meadows explode with wildflowers and the sound of cowbells drifting across the hills becomes the most peaceful thing you’ve ever heard. Windows open, coffee in hand, cowbells in the distance — that’s Garmisch in summer.

In fall everything turns golden and magical in a way that makes you want to stay forever. The crowds thin out, the light gets softer, and Garmisch somehow becomes even more beautiful than it already was.

We lived in Germany for 6 years and this was the place our hearts kept pulling us back to.

Zugspitze — Standing on Top of Germany

If you do nothing else in Garmisch, do this.

The Zugspitze is Germany’s highest mountain at 2,962 meters and taking the cable car from Garmisch to the summit is one of the most spectacular experiences in the country. The views from the top on a clear day are absolutely indescribable — you can see into four countries simultaneously: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy.

Our daughter was completely speechless at the top. We all were.

• The Zugspitze cable car (Seilbahn) departs from near the town center — buy tickets in advance especially in summer and winter high season
• Check the weather forecast before you go — clear days at the summit are magical, cloudy days mean you see nothing
• It is COLD at the summit regardless of the season — bring layers even in August
• There is a restaurant at the summit with the most surreal views you’ll ever eat lunch with
• The border between Germany and Austria runs across the summit — you can literally stand in two countries at once

PRO TIP: Go early in the morning for the best chance of clear skies and to beat the crowds. The light is also better for photos in the morning.

WINTER TIP: In winter the summit is a ski area with slopes for all levels. Taking the cable car up and skiing back down is an experience unlike anything else in Germany.

Garmisch in Summer — Wildflowers + Alpine Magic

Summer in Garmisch is something out of a dream. The meadows surrounding the town explode with wildflowers in every color. The hiking trails through the Alps are accessible to all fitness levels. The rivers run crystal clear with snowmelt. And the long summer evenings mean you can spend hours just sitting somewhere beautiful doing absolutely nothing.

Summer highlights:

• Partnachklamm Gorge — a stunning limestone gorge with a wooden walkway built into the cliff face above a rushing mountain stream. One of the most impressive natural sights in Bavaria and very accessible for families with kids
• Alpine meadow hiking — countless trails through wildflower meadows with mountain views. The Zugspitzplatt area has particularly beautiful summer hiking
• Cycling — rent bikes in town and cycle through the valley. Incredibly scenic and very family friendly
• Riessersee — a beautiful Alpine lake perfect for summer swimming and picnicking
• Richard Strauss Festival — if you visit in late June/early July this classical music festival in an outdoor Alpine setting is magical

SUMMER TIP: Summer weekends in Garmisch get busy with Munich day-trippers. If you can visit on a weekday you’ll have the trails and viewpoints much more to yourself.

Garmisch in Winter — A Bavarian Snow Globe

We have visited Garmisch in winter and the only word for it is magical.

Snow-covered Alpine peaks surrounding a traditional Bavarian town with painted facades and flower boxes (now covered in snow). Christmas markets in the town square. The smell of Glühwein and roasted chestnuts drifting through the cold air. Horses pulling sleighs through the streets.

It is genuinely one of the most beautiful winter scenes in Europe.

Winter highlights:

• Skiing and snowboarding — Garmisch-Partenkirchen hosted the 1936 Winter Olympics and has excellent slopes for all levels. Perfect for families with kids learning to ski
• Sledding — there are accessible sledding hills perfect for kids of all ages
• Cross-country skiing — beautiful groomed trails through the winter landscape
• Christmas market — Garmisch has a charming traditional Christmas market in the town center, much less crowded than Munich’s famous market
• Cozy Bavarian cafes — there is nothing better than warming up with hot chocolate and Apfelstrudel after a morning in the snow

WINTER TIP: Garmisch gets serious snow — pack proper winter boots, warm layers, and snow gear for the kids. The weather can change quickly in the mountains.

The Town Itself — Bavarian Culture at Its Best

Beyond the mountains and the outdoor adventures, Garmisch-Partenkirchen itself is a genuinely charming Bavarian town worth exploring slowly.

The old town (Altstadt) of Partenkirchen in particular is one of the most authentically Bavarian streets in Germany — the buildings are painted with intricate murals depicting scenes from Bavarian history and folklore, a tradition called Lüftlmalerei. Walking down the pedestrian street here feels like stepping back several centuries.

HISTORY FACT: The painted building facades in Garmisch are called Lüftlmalerei — a fresco painting tradition unique to the Bavarian Alps and Tyrol region. The paintings often depict religious scenes, local legends, or the history of the building. Some date back hundreds of years and are genuinely stunning works of art.

• Wander the old town of Partenkirchen — the painted building facades alone are worth the walk
• Browse the local shops for traditional Bavarian crafts, lederhosen, dirndls, and Christmas ornaments
• Olympic Stadium — visit the site of the 1936 Winter Olympics, still in use today
• Partnach River walk — a beautiful riverside walk through the town

What to Eat in Garmisch

Garmisch is Bavaria at its most authentic — which means the food is hearty, delicious, and deeply satisfying after a day in the mountains.

• Brezel (Pretzels) — Bavarian soft pretzels are in a completely different league from anything you’ve had before. Every bakery in Garmisch does them beautifully
• Schweinshaxe — roasted pork knuckle, the ultimate Bavarian comfort food. Crispy skin, tender meat, served with sauerkraut and dumplings
• Käsespätzle — Bavarian cheese noodles. Kids go absolutely crazy for this dish
• Apfelstrudel — warm apple strudel with vanilla sauce. Order it everywhere
• Bavarian beer — obviously. The local beer gardens are an experience in themselves
• Milchkaffee and hot chocolate — warming up in a cozy Bavarian cafe after a mountain morning is one of life’s great pleasures

PRO TIP: Eat at least one meal in a traditional Bavarian Gasthaus (inn/tavern) rather than a tourist-facing restaurant. The food is better, the atmosphere is more authentic, and the prices are usually lower.
