The kind where you pull up the route and think… wait, is this actually going to be good? And then you get there and realize it’s one of the best days you’ve had in a while.

This Kentucky route was exactly that. Punkyville, Pig Out Pizza, and Augusta, Kentucky. Three stops that have absolutely no business being this good, on a route that took us less than two hours from Dayton to reach.

If you’re looking for something completely different from your usual Ohio day trip, this is it.

The Route at a Glance

The whole route runs along US-27 South, which is one of those beautiful Kentucky backroads that makes the drive part of the experience. Rolling hills, small towns, farms. It doesn’t feel like a commute. It feels like a road trip.

Stop 1: Punkyville, Falmouth Kentucky

I didn’t know what to expect from Punkyville. The name alone was enough to make me curious.

What we found was genuinely one of the most unique roadside stops I’ve ever visited. And I’ve traveled to 27 countries. Punkyville is a miniature town built entirely from repurposed materials, antiques, and collected junk by a man named Charles “Punky” Beckett, who started the project in 2003 when he ran out of room for his collection.

Instead of putting everything in a generic storage building, he built a whole little town. A gas station, a dentist’s office, a hotel, a jail, a post office, a bank, and a hardware store. Inside each building are treasures associated with it. The train caboose is filled with train memorabilia and tools used on the railroad.

Punky passed away in 2021, but his wife Joyce and daughter Amy have kept Punkyville open to the public. It’s become a favorite stop for bikers and road-trippers. People have even gotten married in Punkyville’s little one-room church.

Walking through it felt like stepping into someone’s lifelong love letter to history and collecting. Every building had a different feel, a different story, a different collection of things that made you stop and look closer. My Anthropology background made this one extra special. There is something so genuinely human about the impulse to collect, preserve, and share.

Stop 2: Pig Out Pizza, Butler Kentucky

After Punkyville we were hungry, and Pig Out Pizza did not disappoint.

This place is tucked along US-27 in Butler, Kentucky, and from the outside it looks like a simple roadside pizza spot. Then you walk in and realize it also has an antique shop inside, which is honestly very on-brand for this whole route.

From the moment you walk in, it feels like stepping back to a simpler time. Real ingredients, made with care, and a warm friendly atmosphere that’s hard to find everywhere anymore. The deep dish is everything you want it to be. Thick, cheesy, flavorful, and perfectly baked.

The menu highlights include buffalo chicken hoagie, BBQ chicken pizza, wings, loaded pigtail fries, and the signature Pig Out pizza. There’s also outdoor seating with a playground for the kids, and that antique shop on the property adds a fun surprise while you wait for your food.

We ordered the Pig Out Pizza and I’m still thinking about it. The portions are generous, the atmosphere is completely unpretentious, and eating great pizza while browsing antiques is exactly the kind of detail that makes a stop memorable.

Stop 3: Augusta, Kentucky

Augusta was the stop I was least sure about going in and the one I loved the most coming out.

This tiny Kentucky town sits on a soft bend in the Ohio River, about 40 miles east of Covington, and it has a kind of quiet, unhurried beauty that honestly reminded me of the small European river towns we visited during our years living in Germany. Cobblestone streets, historic architecture, the Ohio River stretching out in front of you. It has a feeling that’s hard to describe until you’re standing in it.

Augusta is home to whimsical small-town shops, local eateries, and B&Bs, and it also happens to be the site of the oldest and largest wine cellar in America. An impressive stone structure that survived a Civil War battle. History is literally built into the streets here.

Downtown Augusta feels like stepping onto a movie set where golf carts share the road with cars and time moves at its own gentle pace. We walked Riverside Drive slowly, watched the boats move down the Ohio River, and wandered in and out of the local shops.

Things to Do in Augusta Kentucky

Augusta Ferry

One of the most charming discoveries in Augusta is the ferry that still crosses the Ohio River. It has been running since 1798. That’s not a typo. This little ferry has been carrying people across the river for over 200 years and is one of the oldest continuously operating ferries in the country. Even if you don’t cross, watching it move across the water from Riverside Drive is one of those quietly memorable moments that Augusta does so well.

The Caboose Welcome Center

Right along the riverfront sits a genuine restored railroad caboose serving as Augusta’s welcome center. It’s worth stopping in for local maps, information, and just because a caboose welcome center is completely delightful. A great first stop when you arrive to get your bearings.

The Book Tavern

For the book lovers, Augusta has its own independent bookstore and it’s exactly what you’d hope for in a town this charming. The Book Tavern is a cozy, well-curated shop that feels completely at home in Augusta’s historic downtown. Browse slowly, find something unexpected, and appreciate that a town this small has a bookstore this good.

Baker-Bird Winery and Distillery

Augusta is home to the oldest and largest wine cellar in America. An impressive stone structure that survived a Civil War battle and is still operating today. Baker-Bird Winery offers tastings of their wines including bourbon barrel-aged varieties. The distillery side offers bourbon tours with Ohio River views. If you’re a wine or bourbon lover, this is a non-negotiable stop.

Rosemary Clooney House

Augusta has a Hollywood connection most people don’t know about. It’s the hometown of legendary actress and singer Rosemary Clooney, aunt of George Clooney. The Rosemary Clooney House is a museum dedicated to her life and career, filled with memorabilia, costumes, and the story of one of Hollywood’s most beloved entertainers. A genuinely surprising and wonderful find in such a small town.

Nina Clooney’s Shop

Speaking of the Clooney connection, Nina Clooney’s shop in downtown Augusta is a fun little find with antiques, memorabilia, and a touch of Hollywood mixed in. Worth a browse if you’re already wandering the downtown shops.

The 1811 Historic Jail

Augusta’s 1811 Historic Jail is one of those stops that makes you appreciate how much history is packed into this tiny town. One of the oldest surviving jails in Kentucky, it’s a fascinating piece of local history right in the heart of downtown.

John Parker House

John Parker was a formerly enslaved man who became a successful businessman, inventor, and Underground Railroad conductor, helping hundreds of freedom seekers cross the Ohio River to freedom. His house in Ripley, Ohio, just across the river from Augusta, is a National Historic Landmark. The Augusta area’s connection to the Underground Railroad is a genuinely moving piece of American history worth knowing about.

Knoedler Memorial Library

Augusta’s charming historic library is worth a stop for architecture lovers. A beautiful small-town library that feels completely in keeping with the rest of Augusta’s historic character.

Stay for the Sunset

If you can time your visit to stay for sunset, do it. Augusta is known for having one of the best unobstructed sunset views in this part of the country. All those shades of purple, pink, and gold over the Ohio River with tree-covered hills on the opposite bank and not a single city light in the way. It was one of those moments that made me feel genuinely grateful to live close enough to places like this.

Tips for This Kentucky Day Trip from Dayton

Start early. Leave Dayton mid-morning for perfect pacing. Punkyville first, lunch at Pig Out Pizza, then a long slow afternoon in Augusta. If you want to stay for sunset, give yourself until at least 7-8pm.

Bring cash. Pig Out Pizza takes cards, but smaller stops along this route and the antique shops are easier with cash on hand.

Drive US-27 South the whole way. It’s slightly slower than highway driving but significantly more beautiful. The Kentucky backroads on this route are part of the experience.

This route is stunning in fall. The hills along US-27 turn gorgeous when the leaves change, and Augusta in October is something else entirely. Already planning a return trip.

Augusta is very walkable. Park once on Riverside Drive and explore everything on foot. The ferry, the shops, the winery, the bookstore, the historic sites are all within easy walking distance of each other.

Punkyville is the kind of place that reminds you why you go looking for the off-the-beaten-path stops in the first place. Pig Out Pizza is the kind of meal you talk about on the drive home. And Augusta is the kind of town you start planning to come back to before you’ve even left.
