Honestly, Romania has been on my bucket list since I was a kid. I grew up watching Dracula movies and becoming completely obsessed with the fact that the legend came from a real place. A real castle. A real man. It planted something in me that never went away.

So when we finally went — with Ray and Zoey in tow — it was one of those rare trips where the reality actually exceeded everything I had built up in my head over decades. Medieval castles. Ancient fortified towns. Mountains that look like they belong in a fairytale. And Transylvania — the real Transylvania.

We are a Halloween-obsessed family. We love spooky history, ancient legends, and the kind of places that make you feel like you have stepped into another century entirely. Romania checked every single box and then kept going.

The Real History Behind the Dracula Legend

Before we dive into the itinerary, let’s talk about the history — because it is genuinely fascinating and makes every stop on this trip feel even more significant.

Most people know Dracula from movies and Halloween costumes. But the real story behind the legend is so much more interesting than fiction.

Vlad III, also known as Vlad the Impaler, was a 15th century ruler of Wallachia, a region of modern Romania. He was known for his brutal methods of punishing enemies — including impalement (hence the nickname). Bram Stoker loosely based his fictional Count Dracula on Vlad’s reputation for terror.

What is fascinating from an anthropological perspective is how the legend evolved — from a real historical figure who was actually considered a hero by many Romanians (for defending against Ottoman invasion) into the vampire mythology we know today. Local Romanians have a complicated relationship with the Dracula legend; many find the tourist focus on it reductive given Vlad’s complex historical legacy.

Getting to Romania

Most international flights into Romania arrive at Henri Coanda International Airport in Bucharest. From the US you will typically connect through a major European hub like Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, or Vienna.

If you are already traveling in Europe, Romania is easy to reach by train or budget flight. We flew in from Germany when we lived there and found it very reasonable — and if you are combining Romania with a Germany trip, that is a dream itinerary for history and castle lovers.

Book early and be flexible with dates. Flying into Bucharest and out of a different city like Cluj-Napoca can sometimes save money and adds a natural road trip element to the whole trip.

Getting Around Romania

We drove ourselves and it was absolutely the right call — especially for a family that loves stopping at random castles and ruins along the way.

The roads between Bucharest, Bran, Brasov, and Sighisoara are good and well-signposted. GPS works perfectly. And honestly, driving through Transylvania with misty mountains on either side and medieval towers appearing over hilltops — that IS the experience.

Keep your eyes open while driving between cities. Romania has countless roadside ruins, Orthodox churches, and hilltop fortresses that are not in any guidebook. Some of our best moments were spontaneous pull-overs.

Your 7-Day Romania Family Itinerary

Days 1-2: Bucharest — History, Beauty, and Hidden Spooky Corners

Most people treat Bucharest as just a gateway. Give it two full days and it will completely surprise you.

Bucharest has this fascinating energy that comes from colliding layers of history. Communist-era architecture alongside Belle Epoque buildings. Ancient Orthodox churches next to trendy coffee shops. A city still very much figuring out its identity — and that makes it genuinely interesting.

Bucharest is known as Little Paris but it also has a darker nickname — City of the Dead. The city’s Bellu Cemetery is considered one of the most beautiful and hauntingly atmospheric cemeteries in Europe, with elaborate Victorian tombstones worth a visit for history and architecture lovers.

What to do in Bucharest with kids:

Days 3-4: Bran Castle — Yes, THAT Castle

About 2.5 hours north of Bucharest, Bran Castle is Romania’s most iconic landmark — and one of the most visually dramatic castles in all of Europe.

Perched on a rocky hilltop with towers, turrets, and a narrow winding entrance — it looks exactly like you imagine Dracula’s castle should look. Zoey was absolutely speechless when she first saw it.

While Bran Castle is marketed as Dracula’s Castle, historians note that Vlad the Impaler’s actual connection to Bran is disputed. However, the castle’s history is genuinely dark and fascinating — it served as a military fortress, a royal residence, and a customs checkpoint over its 600+ year history. The legends that grew up around it are as interesting as the facts.

For Halloween lovers and spooky history fans — this is absolutely worth the visit. The interior has winding staircases, secret passages connecting the towers, period-furnished rooms, and displays about both the castle’s real history and the Dracula legend. Kids are absolutely captivated.

Bran Castle tips for families:

• Arrive right when it opens at 9am — crowds build fast, especially in summer and October
• Book tickets online in advance to skip the queue entirely
• Take the guided tour — context makes everything richer
• Check for Halloween special events if visiting in October — they do themed evenings that are supposed to be incredible
• Walk the full exterior before going inside — the outside views are stunning

Days 5-6: Brasov — Our Absolute Favorite

If Romania has one crown jewel for family travel it is Brasov — and we say that having loved every single stop on this trip.

Nestled in the Carpathian Mountains with a perfectly preserved medieval old town, Brasov looks exactly like you imagined medieval Europe would look. Colorful merchant houses. Gothic towers. Mountain views from every corner. A main square that feels like it was designed for long lunches and evening wandering.

Brasov has its own dark history — the Black Church (Biserica Neagra) gets its name from a devastating fire in 1689 that blackened its walls. The church still bears the scorch marks today. It is one of the largest Gothic churches in Eastern Europe and genuinely atmospheric inside.

What to do in Brasov with kids:

• Black Church — the scorched walls and Gothic interior are fascinating and surprisingly kid-friendly
• Tampa Mountain cable car — panoramic views over the city and mountains. Kids love it
• Brasov Citadel ruins — an atmospheric fortress overlooking the city
• Council Square (Piata Sfatului) — the heart of the old town, perfect for long meals and people watching
• Poiana Brasov — a mountain resort area with hiking trails and beautiful scenery

Brasov is extremely walkable. Park your car and explore on foot. The side streets away from the main square have some of the best atmosphere — do not just stick to the tourist trail.

Day 7: Sighisoara — The Birthplace of Vlad the Impaler (Do Not Skip This)

We originally had Sighisoara as optional in our planning. After visiting it became one of the highlights of the entire trip. Do not skip it.

About an hour from Brasov, Sighisoara is the most well-preserved medieval citadel in all of Europe — and the actual birthplace of Vlad the Impaler himself.

You can visit the actual house where Vlad III was born in 1431. It is now a restaurant (of course it is) but the building is original and the history is absolutely real. Standing in the birthplace of the man who inspired Dracula is genuinely one of those travel moments that stays with you.

Walking into Sighisoara’s old town feels like stepping directly into the 15th century. The Clock Tower. The colorful painted merchant houses climbing the hillside. The Church on the Hill with its covered wooden staircase. The cobblestone streets. It is completely magical.

What to do in Sighisoara:

• Visit Vlad the Impaler’s birthplace (now Casa Vlad Dracul restaurant)
• Climb the Clock Tower — views over the citadel and surrounding countryside
