If you’ve been looking for a fall event that goes way beyond a basic haunted house, the Headless Horseman Festival at Conner Prairie is it. This is the kind of night that sticks with you long after October ends, and once you go, it becomes one of those things you just have to do every year.

We went last year and I’m not exaggerating when I say the caramel apples alone are worth the drive. But honestly, everything about this event is just really well done. It has that rare combination of genuinely spooky atmosphere and family-friendly fun, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.

Here’s everything you need to plan your visit.

https://bucketlisttravelfam.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/BLTF-Pinterest-Pin.mp4

What Is the Headless Horseman Festival?

The Headless Horseman Festival at Conner Prairie is an evening outdoor event held every fall at the Conner Prairie living history museum in Fishers, Indiana. The whole experience is built around the legend of Sleepy Hollow, and from the moment you arrive, the setting just works. Think lantern light, fog rolling across open fields, and the very real possibility that something is going to jump out of the darkness at you.

This is not a standard corn maze situation. There are multiple attractions spread across the grounds, live entertainment, food and drinks, and an atmosphere that feels theatrical in the best possible way.

2026 Dates and Hours

The Headless Horseman Festival runs on select evenings throughout October.

2026 Dates: October 1 through October 25, Thursdays through Sundays

Hours: 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Tickets sell out, especially on weekends, so buy ahead of time through the Conner Prairie website.

Tickets and Pricing

General Admission: $26 per person (non-member)

Conner Prairie members receive a discount, so if you plan to visit Conner Prairie for other events throughout the year, membership is worth looking into.

Haunted Hayride: $10 per person, purchased separately at the event

Parking is free, which is genuinely great for a ticketed event of this size.

Getting There

Conner Prairie is located at 13400 Allisonville Road in Fishers, Indiana, just north of Indianapolis.

From the Dayton area, you’re looking at about 90 minutes via I-70 West. It’s an easy straight shot, and because the event goes until 10 PM, you have plenty of flexibility with your arrival time.

If you’re planning a longer Indiana day trip and want to explore more of the area while you’re up there, check out our Indiana day trips from Ohio guide for ideas to pair with your visit.

What to Do at the Festival

The Haunted Hayride

This is the main event, and it lives up to the hype. The hayride follows a guided route through the darkened grounds while cast members bring the legend of Sleepy Hollow to life. It’s theatrical, atmospheric, and just scary enough without crossing into genuinely traumatizing territory.

The hayride is a separate $10 ticket purchased on-site. Get in line early because it does get backed up as the evening goes on.

Trail of Terror Corn Maze

The corn maze at Conner Prairie covers 11 acres, and at night with the Trail of Terror overlay, it becomes something else entirely. Even if you’re good at mazes, budget extra time here because the atmosphere slows you down in the best way. You’ll be stopping to look over your shoulder every few minutes.

Axe Throwing

Yes, axe throwing is part of this event and it’s as fun as it sounds. Instructors walk you through everything so no experience is needed. It’s a great palate cleanser between the scarier attractions and honestly one of those things everyone in your group will want to try.

Barrel Train Ride

If you’re bringing little ones, the barrel train is perfect for kids 48 inches and under. It keeps the younger crowd happy and gives parents a chance to enjoy the event without anyone melting down over being too scared.

1859 Balloon Voyage

One of the more unique offerings at the festival, the tethered hot air balloon gives you a bird’s eye view of the grounds after dark. It’s a different way to see the whole event laid out below you, and the night lighting makes it genuinely beautiful.

Live Entertainment

Circle City Fire performers bring fire shows to the festival grounds throughout the evening. They add another layer to the overall atmosphere that makes the whole event feel more like an immersive experience than a simple ticket attraction.

Food and Drinks

The Apple Store

Do not skip the Apple Store. I cannot stress this enough.

They’re open from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM and serve caramel apples that are absolutely worth building your evening timeline around. We went back twice last year. They also carry cider, and everything about this little stop just hits differently when you’re surrounded by fall air and festival lanterns.

Sleepy Hollow Tavern

The Sleepy Hollow Tavern is the adult beverage spot on the grounds, and they serve Ichabrewed Crane, a craft beer brewed specifically for the festival in collaboration with Sun King Brewery out of Indianapolis. It’s a fun detail that adds to the Sleepy Hollow storytelling running through the whole event, and it’s actually really good beer.

Food options are available throughout the festival grounds, so you won’t need to eat before you arrive unless you want to.

Tips for Your Visit

Buy tickets in advance. Weekend dates especially fill up fast. Don’t assume you can grab tickets at the gate.

Dress for the weather. October evenings in Indiana get cold, especially once the sun goes down. Layers are your friend — you’ll be outside the entire time. I always bring a packable puffer jacket that I can stuff in my bag if it warms up, and if it’s going to be really chilly, hand warmers are a total game changer for an outdoor evening event. A good insulated travel mug for hot cider doesn’t hurt either.

Wear comfortable shoes. This is an outdoor event across open grounds. Leave the cute boots at home or at least make sure they’re walkable. We like lightweight trail sneakers for this kind of event — comfortable, grippy, and you won’t regret it after two hours on uneven ground. Kids’ sneakers with good traction matter just as much here.

Keep your hands free. A small crossbody bag or fanny pack is so much better than a backpack when you’re navigating a dark corn maze and trying to hold a caramel apple at the same time.

Arrive at opening or plan to stay late. The crowds are lightest right at 5 PM and again closer to 9-10 PM. Peak crowds tend to hit around 7-8 PM.

Bring cash for the hayride. The $10 hayride ticket is purchased on-site, so it’s worth having cash on hand.

The whole event takes 2 to 3 hours if you do everything, so plan accordingly for the drive home.

Is It Scary? Who Is It For?

The Headless Horseman Festival is genuinely atmospheric and has scare elements throughout, but it’s designed to be accessible for most ages. Families with older kids (roughly 7 and up) tend to do really well here. The barrel train ride and some of the lighter activities keep younger kids engaged, though the full experience really is designed with tweens, teens, and adults in mind.

If you’re looking for something that goes harder on the horror side, this might feel tame. If you want an immersive, well-produced fall event that has real atmosphere without leaving anyone having nightmares for a week, this is the sweet spot.

Plan Your Full Day

Since you’re making the drive, it’s worth turning this into a full Indiana day trip. Fishers and the surrounding Indianapolis area have a lot going on in October. Check our Indiana day trips from Ohio guide for suggestions on how to fill the hours before the festival starts.

While you’re in Indianapolis, GetYourGuide has some great options worth exploring before the evening kicks off — from Indianapolis walking tours and experiences to Indiana day trip adventures that pair perfectly with an October evening at Conner Prairie.

Final Thoughts

The Headless Horseman Festival is one of those events that earns its spot on the annual fall bucket list. The combination of a gorgeous outdoor setting, a well-executed Sleepy Hollow theme, and genuinely fun activities makes it stand out from the crowd of October haunted attractions. And if we’re being honest, the caramel apples and the Ichabrewed Crane beer seal the deal.

Ohio has a secret identity.

Underneath all the corn fields and small towns and perfectly ordinary suburbs, there is a whole other Ohio — one with a weeping bronze angel that cries black tears, a 5,000-pound granite ball that has been slowly rotating in a cemetery for over 100 years, a ghost town in the woods with a haunted railroad tunnel, a half-man half-frog cryptid that two police officers reported seeing in Loveland, and a medieval castle built by a single man over 50 years on the banks of the Little Miami River.

This is the Ohio that does not make it into the tourism brochures. And it is genuinely one of the most interesting states in the country once you know where to look.

Here is your guide to the weirdest, spookiest, and most fascinating Ohio roadside legends and hidden gems — perfect for a fall road trip or an October bucket list.

Pack for Your Spooky Ohio Road Trip

A few things that make these adventures better:

A good travel journal to document the legends and locations you visit

The Weeping Angel of Lake View Cemetery — Cleveland

This is the one people cannot stop talking about, and once you see it you will understand why.

Officially titled “The Angel of Death Victorious,” the Haserot Angel sits in Section 9 of Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland — the same cemetery where James Garfield is buried, where John D. Rockefeller rests, and where you can climb the 180-foot Garfield Monument for panoramic city views. But the Haserot Angel is the one that stops people in their tracks.

The life-size bronze sculpture was commissioned by canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot after his wife’s death in 1919. Artist Herman Matzen created a seated angel with outstretched wings, a forward gaze, and an inverted torch — symbolizing extinguished life. Over decades, as the bronze aged, black streaks formed beneath the eyes. The angel appears to be weeping black tears.

It is undeniably beautiful and undeniably unnerving at the same time. The statue sits slightly off the main cemetery road beneath trees near the Hanna Mausoleum, so bring a cemetery map — it is easy to miss and absolutely worth finding.

Lake View Cemetery hours: 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM (April through October) Free admission Location: Lake View Cemetery, 12316 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH 44106 Lake View Cemetery website

The Rotating Granite Ball — Marion Cemetery

In 1896, the Merchant family installed a 5,200-pound polished granite sphere atop their grave monument in Marion Cemetery. Within two years, the ball began to rotate on its own.

Nobody has ever fully explained it. By 1929 it was famous enough to be featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not. According to locals, it is still moving today — visitors who look carefully can see the single unpolished spot on the ball shift position over time.

The cemetery has multiple large stone spheres from the late 19th century, so look specifically for the one bearing the name C.B. Merchant in the northeast section.

Cemetery hours: M-F 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM (closed noon to 1 PM) Free Location: Marion Cemetery, 620 Delaware Ave, Marion, OH Roadside America: Merchant Tombstone

Moonville Tunnel — Vinton County

Deep in the Wayne National Forest in Southeast Ohio, down a hiking trail through the woods, sits a brick railroad tunnel from 1856 — all that remains of the ghost town of Moonville.

The town existed to support the coal industry and vanished when the railroad rerouted. The tunnel survived. And according to legend, the ghost of a man killed by a train still wanders the old track bed inside the tunnel at night, lantern in hand.

Moonville Tunnel has become one of the most visited haunted destinations in Ohio, particularly in October. The hike in is about a mile each way through beautiful Appalachian forest, which makes it one of the rare Ohio spooky destinations that doubles as a genuinely scenic outdoor experience. The tunnel itself is dark, atmospheric, and covered in decades of graffiti from visitors who felt the need to leave their mark.

Free and accessible year-round during daylight hours. Location: Zaleski, Vinton County, OH (off Wheelabout Road — download the map from moonvilletunnel.net before you go, cell service is unreliable out here) Moonville Tunnel website Ohio DNR Moonville Tunnel page

The Loveland Frogman — Loveland

In 1955, a traveling businessman reported seeing three bipedal frog-like creatures standing along the Little Miami River near Loveland, Ohio, one of which held a device that emitted sparks. In 1972, two separate Loveland police officers reported seeing a large frog-like creature — roughly four feet tall — on the side of the road. One of them shot at it. It jumped over the guardrail and into the river.

The Loveland Frogman has been part of Ohio lore ever since.

Loveland has leaned into it beautifully. The Loveland Frogman Museum celebrates the legend with exhibits on the sightings, local lore, and the broader history of cryptid encounters along the river. Loveland also hosts a Frogman Festival, and the town’s general embrace of its most unusual claim to fame makes it a genuinely fun stop.

While you are in Loveland, add Loveland Castle (Château Laroche) to the itinerary — a medieval castle built stone by stone over 50 years by one man, Harry Andrews, beginning in 1929. Andrews hauled stones from the Little Miami River and constructed the castle largely by himself. It is one of the most genuinely bizarre and wonderful things in Ohio and it is right there.

Loveland Frogman Museum Loveland Castle

Waynesville — The Most Haunted Village in Ohio

Paranormal author Chris Woodyard has called Waynesville the most haunted village in Ohio, with more than 30 documented haunted locations packed into a tiny historic downtown. The village is small, walkable, and genuinely atmospheric — Victorian storefronts, a creek running through the center of town, and the kind of old Ohio small-town character that feels unchanged from a hundred years ago.

October is Waynesville’s moment. The village goes all in for Halloween with ghost tours, haunted history walks, and the kind of spooky small-town energy that is increasingly hard to find. It is about 30 minutes from Dayton, making it one of the most convenient spooky destinations in Southwest Ohio.

Hell Town (Boston Mills) — Cuyahoga Valley

In the 1970s, the federal government acquired the town of Boston Mills in Summit County to create Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The residents were relocated, the buildings were left standing and boarded up, and the town became a ghost town almost overnight.

The locals called it Hell Town.

Urban legends multiplied. Chemical spills. Mutations. Satanic activity. School buses full of children killed on a road known as the End of the World. None of it is true — the town was simply cleared for a national park. But the empty buildings, the eerily quiet roads, and the sign at the end of Stanford Road that genuinely says “ROAD CLOSED: NO OUTLET” fueled decades of legend.

Today much of the original town is gone, but the atmosphere in that part of the Cuyahoga Valley on a foggy October morning is something else entirely. Location: Boston Mills area, Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Gore Orphanage Road — Vermilion

A road in Lorain County with one of the darkest legends in Ohio. In the late 19th century, an orphanage burned to the ground, killing children inside. Visitors to the area have reported for decades hearing distant screams, seeing lights in the woods, and finding children’s handprints appearing on their cars.

Historians note the orphanage fire story is more legend than documented history — but the road, the woods, and the atmosphere are completely real. Gore Orphanage Road near Vermilion is one of those places where the legend and the setting combine into something genuinely unsettling. Location: Gore Orphanage Rd, Vermilion, OH

The Circleville Letter Writer — Pickaway County

From the late 1970s through the 1990s, residents of Circleville, Ohio received mysterious threatening letters written in block script — sometimes revealing secrets, sometimes making accusations, always anonymous. The letters terrorized the community for nearly two decades.

One man was convicted and imprisoned, but the letters continued arriving even while he was in prison. The true author was never definitively identified. The Circleville Letter Writer remains one of the most genuinely unsolved Ohio mysteries and the subject of documentaries and true crime coverage that still captivates people today.

The Witches Tower — Hills and Dales MetroPark, Dayton

Right in the Dayton area, tucked inside Hills and Dales MetroPark, is a stone lookout tower with a tragic history. In May of 1967, a 16-year-old named Peggy and her boyfriend sought shelter in the tower during a storm. Lightning struck the tower and killed Peggy.

Local legend developed quickly — whispers about witches, about why the lightning struck, about what happens to those who visit after dark. The tower is accessible during park hours and the surrounding park is beautiful in fall color. The history is real; the legends are for you to decide.

Location: Hills and Dales MetroPark, Dayton, OH

Eugene the Mummy — Sabina

One of the strangest chapters in Ohio history. In 1928, an unidentified man was found dead in Sabina. Unable to identify him, the town embalmed the body. And then kept it. For 36 years, the mummified remains were displayed as a roadside attraction, shown to curious visitors who paid to see him.

The town eventually gave him a proper burial in 1964. His headstone reads: Eugene, Found Dead: 1928, Buried: 1964. He was never identified.

Location: Sabina Cemetery, Sabina, OH

Elizabeth’s Grave — Chillicothe

At Mount Union-Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Chillicothe sits a headstone for a woman named Elizabeth — and according to local legend, that headstone moves on its own. Elizabeth reportedly took her own life by hanging from a tree near this spot, and is said to be unhappy with visitors disturbing her grave.

Whether you believe the legend or not, Chillicothe itself is worth a visit — it is the home of Tecumseh! outdoor drama and has a genuinely rich history as Ohio’s first state capital.

Location: Mount Union-Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Chillicothe, OH

Tips for Exploring Spooky Ohio

Bring a paper map or download directions before you go. Many of Ohio’s best weird and haunted spots are in rural areas with no cell service. Moonville Tunnel in particular — download the trail map before you leave home.

Go in October but know that crowds follow. Moonville Tunnel and the Haserot Angel get genuinely busy on October weekends. A weekday visit or an early morning arrival gives you a completely different experience.

Respect the spaces. Cemeteries, ghost towns, and historic sites are real places with real history. Take photos, enjoy the atmosphere, leave everything as you found it.

Pair these stops with other Ohio day trips. Many of these locations are within easy distance of other destinations — combine the Haserot Angel with a full Lake View Cemetery visit and a Cleveland afternoon, pair Loveland Frogman with Loveland Castle and a walk along the Little Miami River, or make Moonville Tunnel the centerpiece of a Hocking Hills weekend.

Book a guided ghost tour for the full experience. If you want someone else to do the research and storytelling for you, GetYourGuide has great options for guided spooky experiences in Ohio:

Blood Prison — Mansfield

If you only do one haunted house in Ohio this year, make it Blood Prison. Set inside the actual Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield — yes, the real prison, the same one used to film The Shawshank Redemption — Blood Prison uses the real cell blocks, the real corridors, and the real history of one of the most atmospheric buildings in Ohio. There are no guard escorts. You navigate the actual prison with crazed inmates around every corner. The setting alone puts this in a category no constructed haunted house can match.

Opens: September 25 Location: Mansfield Reformatory, 100 Reformatory Rd, Mansfield, OH Blood Prison website

Factory of Terror — Canton

Location: Canton, OH Factory of Terror website

The Dent Schoolhouse — Cincinnati

Featured on Forbes, USA Today, BuzzFeed, and the Travel Channel, The Dent Schoolhouse is one of the most produced haunted experiences in the Midwest. One of the best in the state for pure production value.

Location: 5963 Harrison Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45248 Dent Schoolhouse website

Cincinnati Fear Fest — Williamsburg

A full-scale Halloween festival built around multiple world-class haunted houses, with immersive ghost town sets, live actors, secret bars, food, live entertainment, and vendors alongside the actual haunted attractions. This one is worth an evening rather than a quick visit — arrive early, eat something, and work through the attractions at your own pace.

Location: Lewisburg, OH Lewisburg Haunted Cave website

The Spooky Road Trips Worth Adding to Your October

Mothman in Point Pleasant, West Virginia

About two and a half hours from Dayton and two hours from Columbus, Point Pleasant, West Virginia is one of the most genuinely strange and fascinating places within driving distance of Ohio — and it is the kind of destination that feels completely different from any haunted house or Halloween event.

In 1966, residents of Point Pleasant began reporting sightings of a large, winged, red-eyed creature that came to be known as the Mothman. The sightings continued for over a year, culminating in the collapse of the Silver Bridge on December 15, 1967, which killed 46 people. The Mothman legend has never fully left Point Pleasant since.

What to do in Point Pleasant:

The Mothman Museum on Main Street is the only museum in the world dedicated to the legend, with eyewitness documents from the original 1966 sightings, historical press clippings, Silver Bridge disaster photographs, and props from the 2002 film The Mothman Prophecies. Admission is $4 for adults and $1 for kids under 10.

The Mothman Statue in Mothman Park on 4th Street downtown is a stainless steel sculpture with glowing red eyes by artist Bob Roach. It is the go-to photo stop for every visitor.

The TNT Area is the World War II munitions plant site where the Mothman was most frequently reported. Hayrides and guided shuttle tours operate through the area — check mothmanlives.com for details.

The Silver Bridge Memorial honors the 46 lives lost in the 1967 collapse. The Point Pleasant River Museum nearby has a scale model and an actual eyebar assembly from the collapsed bridge. The real history underneath the legend is haunting in its own right.

Before you leave, stop at The Coffee Grinder for a green frosted Mothman cookie with red eyes. This is non-negotiable.

Mothman Festival: Held the third weekend of September each year, the Mothman Festival draws visitors from across the country with vendors, live music, guest speakers, Mothman tours, a pancake eating contest, and a Miss Mothman pageant. If your October is booked, put next September on the calendar.

Address: 400 Main Street, Point Pleasant, WV 25550 Mothman Museum website Mothman Festival website

Franklin Castle — Cleveland

Ohio’s most famously haunted building is a dramatic Gothic Victorian mansion in Cleveland that has been the subject of ghost stories for decades. Exterior viewing only — park nearby, photograph the incredible architecture, and soak up the atmosphere. Pair it with a Cleveland ghost tour for a full spooky evening in the city.

Cleveland Ghosts tours

Ohio State Reformatory — Mansfield

Even beyond Blood Prison’s haunted attraction season, the Ohio State Reformatory offers regular tours of the actual building throughout the fall — including paranormal investigation nights for those who want to go deeper than a haunted house experience. The Reformatory is one of the most striking Gothic buildings in the Midwest and worth a daytime or evening visit entirely on its own.

Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society

Tips for Haunted House Season in Ohio

Buy tickets in advance. The major haunted houses — Blood Prison, Factory of Terror, Dent Schoolhouse — sell out on October Saturdays. Do not assume you can show up.

Go on a weeknight or early in the season. September and early October weeknight visits have dramatically shorter waits and a completely different experience than a packed Saturday night in late October.

Check the scare level before you go. Most professional haunted attractions are genuinely intense and not appropriate for young children or anyone sensitive to strobe lights, fog, or jump scares. Read the attraction’s website for age recommendations and content warnings.

Wear comfortable shoes and layers. Outdoor queue lines on cold October nights are part of the experience. Hand warmers and a good jacket make the wait much more manageable.

Budget the full evening. A quality haunted house experience with travel time, queue time, the attraction itself, and any add-ons takes a full evening. Do not try to squeeze it into a quick hour.

If you are within two hours of Cincinnati, Kings Island HalloWeekends is one of those fall events that belongs on your October calendar. One of the largest Halloween events in the Midwest, it takes over the entire park on select nights from late September through Halloween, and it is genuinely impressive in scale — from the live shows and scare zones to the full lineup of haunted mazes and night rides on some of the best coasters in the region.

Here is everything you need to know to plan your visit, whether you are bringing the whole family or heading out for a scary night with older kids and teens.

What Is Kings Island HalloWeekends?

HalloWeekends is Kings Island’s annual Halloween event, running select nights from September 25 through October 31, 2026. After dark, the park transforms with scare zones, haunted mazes, live entertainment, and themed food and drinks — all while the coasters keep running well into the evening.

The event is presented by SNICKERS and draws massive crowds, especially on October Saturday nights. Plan accordingly.

Two Events in One: Tricks and Treats vs. Halloween Haunt

One thing that makes Kings Island stand out for families is that it actually runs two separate Halloween events depending on the time of day.

Tricks and Treats (Family Friendly, Daytime)

Tricks and Treats runs select days from September 27 through November 1, 2026, during park hours before the sun goes down. This is the version for younger kids and families who want the Halloween atmosphere without the scares.

What is included:

Trick-or-Treat Trail with costumed characters handing out candy

Mask Makers Mash craft station

Costume Contest at the Bandstand

Live entertainment including The Fangtasticks band, Skelebration Dance Party, and PEANUTS-themed shows

Ride access on select family attractions

Planet Snoopy (closes at 6 PM on Haunt nights)

This is zero scares, all fun, and a great option if you have little ones in tow or want to do a mix — start with Tricks and Treats in the afternoon and let the older kids stay for Haunt once it gets dark.

Halloween Haunt (Teens and Adults, After Dark)

Once the sun goes down, Kings Island flips into a completely different experience. Halloween Haunt is not recommended for children under 13, and the scare zones and mazes take that seriously.

What Is Included with General Admission

Your park ticket covers more than you might expect:

Four Scare Zones (no extra charge):

Pumpkin Eater

Coney Maul — abandoned carnival setting

Abandoned — creepy lumber company grounds

The Haunted Mazes (Priced Separately)

Here is the big change for 2026: haunted mazes are no longer included with general admission. You will need to add a Haunted Attractions Pass to access them.

Six Mazes Total:

JASON: Blood Reign (NEW) — Friday the 13th themed walkthrough

Metal Massacre (NEW) — heavy metal horror nightmare world

Order of the Dragon — vampire catacombs

Alien Abyss (presented by SNICKERS)

Killmart (presented by M&Ms)

Slaughter House (presented by SKITTLES)

Haunted Attractions Pass pricing:

Per night: starting at $15

All-season pass: starting at $49

Bundle option: Park admission plus maze access starts at $64, which is the better deal if you know you want the full experience.

Ticket Prices

Daily park tickets start at $45 (marked down from $119, so buy online)

Season passes from $99 for renewals, $125 for a 2027 Gold Pass

Halloween Haunt bundles (admission plus mazes) start at $64

The Conjuring: Beyond Fear premium experience is an additional $20 and up

Tips for Planning Your Visit

Go on a Friday or early Sunday. October Saturdays are the most crowded nights of the season. A Friday evening or early Sunday gives you a noticeably better experience and shorter waits, especially for the mazes.

Do Tricks and Treats first if you have younger kids. Arrive in the afternoon, hit Planet Snoopy and the family rides, do the trick-or-treat trail, and let the little ones head home with a grandparent or head to the car when Haunt kicks off. The older kids stay and get the full Halloween experience.

Ride the coasters early. Lines for Beast and Orion get long as the night goes on. Hit them right when Haunt opens, then work your way through the scare zones and shows.

Dress for the weather. Evening temperatures in October in Ohio can drop fast. Layers are your best friend, especially if you are there past 9 PM. A few things worth grabbing before you go:

Halloween hand warmers — great for cold October nights

Kids Halloween costumes that layer over clothes

Crossbody bag — hands free for the whole night

Glow sticks and LED accessories for the kids

Eat before you go or budget for it. Park food at a special event is park food — fine but pricey. Kings Island does themed food and drinks for HalloWeekends that are actually fun if you want the full experience, but if you are watching the budget, eat beforehand.

Check the calendar for Haunt versus family nights. The park runs dedicated family-friendly days and dedicated Haunt nights. Make sure you are booking the right one for your group.

Is It Worth It for Families with Teens?

Absolutely yes. The combination of top-tier coasters running after dark, legitimate scare zones, and a strong haunted maze lineup makes this one of the best Halloween events in Ohio for the 13-and-up crowd. Your teenager will love it.

For mixed-age families, the Tricks and Treats daytime format gives younger kids a real Halloween event experience without the nightmare fuel, and the transition to Haunt after dark means you can genuinely make a full-day trip out of it with something for everyone.

Getting There from Dayton

Kings Island is about 45 minutes south of Dayton on I-71, making it one of the easiest day trips in the region. From the Centerville area you are looking at a smooth 40-minute drive with no major traffic concerns on weeknight evenings.

Address: 6300 Kings Island Drive, Kings Island, OH 45034

Parking is an additional cost — purchase it in advance through the Kings Island website to save a few dollars and skip the parking toll line.

The leaves turn, the air gets that perfect crisp edge, and suddenly every weekend has three things worth doing and not enough time to do them all.
Whether you are looking for haunted houses, fall festivals, pumpkin patches, ghost tours, or just a beautiful afternoon outside, October in Ohio delivers.

Caramel Apple Festival — Fairborn, Oct 24 Note: double check the date closer to the event, as a couple of sources listed it slightly differently. Worth confirming before you make the drive.

Fleur de Flea: Pickin’ in the Bluegrass — Louisville, Oct 25 Worth the Kentucky road trip for the vintage lovers in the group. Louisville in October is always a good idea.

Dayton Book Fair — Oct 30-Nov 1 Ohio’s largest used book sale, benefiting local nonprofits. A wonderful way to spend a fall afternoon, and you will not leave empty-handed.

Pumpkin Patches and Corn Mazes

Ohio has some of the best fall farms in the country and October is peak season for both. Rather than list them all here, I put together two full statewide guides:

Best Pumpkin Patches in Ohio 2026 — from quick pick-your-own stops to full fall festival farms

Best Corn Mazes in Ohio 2026 — organized by region across the state

A few that keep coming up as community favorites: Derthick’s Corn Maze in Mantua (three mazes, 10+ acres), Groovy Plants Ranch in Marengo (4.9 stars with 2,000+ reviews), Hershberger’s Farm in Millersburg for Amish country apple cider donut energy, and Szalay’s Farm in Peninsula right next to Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Fall Foliage and Outdoor October

Hocking Hills Peak color typically hits mid-to-late October. The gorges and cliffs are stunning in fall color — this is one of those places that looks like a screensaver when the leaves turn. If Hocking Hills is not on your October list, let this be your sign.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park The Towpath Trail is gorgeous in fall, and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad offers a leaf-peeping ride that is worth every penny. One of the most beautiful October afternoons available in Northeast Ohio.

Caesar Creek State Park — near Waynesville A great add-on to a Waynesville or Sauerkraut Festival trip. Caesar Creek has hiking, kayaking, and fossil hunting along the creek bed where you can find 450-million-year-old marine fossils right on the surface. See our Waynesville day trip guide for how to combine the two.

Ghost Tours and Spooky Experiences

If you want someone else to do the storytelling while you soak up the atmosphere, guided ghost tours are one of the best ways to experience Ohio’s haunted history in October.

Tips for October in Ohio

Buy haunted house tickets in advance. Blood Prison, Factory of Terror, and Dent Schoolhouse sell out on October Saturdays. Do not assume you can walk up.

Arrive early to festivals. The Sauerkraut Festival and Circleville Pumpkin Show both get very crowded by midday. Early arrival means better parking, shorter lines, and more of the good stuff.

Layer up. Ohio October afternoons can be warm and beautiful. Ohio October evenings can be genuinely cold. Dress for both.

Bring cash. Many festival vendors, farm attractions, and haunted houses prefer or require cash for add-ons and purchases.

Double check dates closer to the event. A couple of listings in this guide had slight date discrepancies across sources — always verify on the event’s official website before making the drive.

If medieval charm had a capital, it would be Sighișoara. Cobblestone streets, pastel houses, and the faint echo of history around every corner — it’s one of those towns that makes you feel like you’ve stepped straight into a storybook (the kind that may or may not include a vampire).

We instantly fell in love with this hilltop gem in Transylvania. It’s compact, walkable, and absolutely dripping in character — with just enough mystery to keep things interesting. Whether you’re here for history, haunting legends, or simply the aesthetic, Sighișoara delivers.

A Town Frozen in Time

Sighișoara’s medieval citadel is one of the best-preserved in all of Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and unlike some other “museum towns,” people still live here. Laundry lines stretch between centuries-old houses, kids play in the shadow of the Clock Tower, and the smell of chimney smoke drifts through winding alleyways. It’s hauntingly beautiful in the most human way.

Top Things to See & Do in Sighișoara

1. The Clock Tower
This 64-meter-tall icon dominates the skyline and offers panoramic views of the entire town. Inside, the History Museum walks you through centuries of Transylvanian life — from armor to art. But the real reward is climbing to the top for that view. (Trust me, your legs will forgive you later.)

2. The Citadel of Sighișoara
The heart of the town — colorful houses, narrow lanes, and that fairytale feel that photographers dream about. This is where you’ll want to wander aimlessly with a camera and a coffee in hand.

3. Vlad Dracula’s Birthplace
Yes, that Dracula. Vlad the Impaler, the infamous ruler who inspired Bram Stoker’s vampire, was born here in 1431. His childhood home is now a restaurant serving traditional Romanian fare — try the goulash and imagine plotting your next empire.

4. The Scholars’ Stairs (Scara Școlarilor)
A covered wooden staircase built to protect students from the weather as they climbed to school. It’s eerie, photogenic, and a bit of a workout — the perfect combo.

5. Church on the Hill (Biserica din Deal)
A Gothic masterpiece watching over the town. The view from here? Unreal. There’s also a small museum and an old cemetery with weathered stones that tell centuries of stories.

6. Craftsmen’s Square & the Tinsmiths’ Tower
This little square feels like a movie set, with artisans selling handmade goods and the occasional musician playing in the background. The nearby tower sometimes hosts art exhibits — a cool mix of medieval and modern.

7. Tailors’ Tower
Once part of the city’s defense system, it now houses a small weapons museum. Worth a quick stop, especially if you’re into medieval armor and tales of knights who probably had more bravery than sense.

8. Fortified Churches Near Sighișoara
If you have time, venture to nearby Biertan and Viscri, both UNESCO sites known for their fortified churches and postcard-perfect villages. They’re easy day trips and feel straight out of a fairy tale (minus the fangs).

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April–June): Mild weather, blooming hillsides, and fewer tourists. Perfect for quiet exploration and golden-hour photos.

Summer (July–August): Peak season with festivals and longer daylight — ideal for families, though it can get busy.

Autumn (September–October): My personal favorite — fall colors, cozy weather, and that magical Transylvanian mist that makes the citadel even more atmospheric.

Winter (December–March): If you love snowy rooftops and twinkle lights, this is your moment. Sighișoara looks straight out of a Christmas card.

Sighișoara is proof that some stories don’t fade with time — they just get better with age. Whether you’re here to trace the legend of Dracula, climb medieval towers, or sip coffee in a sunlit square surrounded by 14th-century charm, this town will cast its spell on you.

If Transylvania has a heart, this is it — and it beats to the rhythm of cobblestones, church bells, and a little bit of mystery.

If you’ve ever wanted to attend a festival that feels like stepping straight into the heart of fall, the Circleville Pumpkin Show is it. Picture streets lined with orange everything — pumpkin donuts, pumpkin pizza, pumpkin chili (yes, really) — and giant gourds that look like they could squash a small car.

Held each October in Circleville, Ohio, this four-day celebration is known as “The Greatest Free Show on Earth.” It’s part hometown parade, part food fair, and part pumpkin obsession, all rolled into one delightfully over-the-top autumn event.

A Slice of Pumpkin History

The Pumpkin Show started back in 1903, when local mayor George Haswell decided to decorate the streets with corn stalks, pumpkins, and displays from local farmers. What began as a small community event has since grown into a Midwest tradition that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

But don’t worry — despite its size, it still keeps that small-town charm. There are marching bands, 7 parades (yes, seven!), and more pumpkin-themed foods than you thought possible.

Must-Try Pumpkin Treats

The food at Circleville’s Pumpkin Show is legendary. You’ll find:

Pumpkin donuts (iconic — go early, they sell out fast)

Pumpkin chili and burgers for the adventurous

Pumpkin pie by the slice or whole to take home

Pumpkin ice cream and fudge for sweet tooths

Pro tip: Bring cash and stretchy pants.

The stars of the show? The giant pumpkin weigh-in, where growers bring in their massive orange masterpieces — some topping 1,600 pounds! You can see them lined up in the town square and vote for your favorite.

The parades are another must-see — from local marching bands to the Little Miss Pumpkin Show contest. Don’t miss the Pet Parade if you want to see dogs dressed like gourds.

Between food booths and live music, the streets are filled with local crafters selling autumn décor, candles, jewelry, and all things pumpkin-scented. There’s also a full midway with rides, games, and twinkling lights once the sun sets — perfect for families or date nights.

The Circleville Pumpkin Show is one of those classic Midwest events that feels both nostalgic and electric at the same time — like fall itself. Whether you’re chasing the scent of fresh pumpkin donuts, watching the parades roll by, or just soaking up small-town charm, you’ll leave with full hands, happy taste buds, and a deeper appreciation for Ohio in autumn.
