I am a self-confessed fall fanatic. The candles come out in July. The fall playlist starts the first week of August. And every year I start building my fall events list way before anyone else is ready to admit that summer is winding down.

This year the lineup is genuinely incredible — and I want to share everything that’s already on my list, from the festivals I’ve been counting down to all year to the hidden gems that most people outside the region don’t even know about.

Before Fall Even Officially Starts: Sunflower Season

Maize Valley Winery Sunflower Festival — Hartville, Ohio

August 22 + August 29, 2026

This is technically still summer but it absolutely counts as the start of the fall season for me — and it’s one of the most beautiful events in Ohio.

Maize Valley Winery in Hartville turns their grounds into a sunflower paradise every late August, with acres of sunflowers, wine tastings, live music, food, and the kind of golden late-summer atmosphere that makes you want to stay all afternoon. Two dates this year — August 22 and August 29. Pick your weekend and go early for the best light.

Hidden Valley Orchards Sunflower U-Pick — Lebanon, Ohio
September 2026

Hidden Valley Orchards at 5474 N State Route 48 in Lebanon has a Sunflower Field at the top of the hill with U-Pick sunflowers open every September. It’s not a standalone festival — it’s a U-Pick experience right on the farm, which is honestly even better. Stroll through fields of golden blooms and bring home your favorite stems for a perfect seasonal bouquet. Combine with the cidery, fresh baked goods, live music nights, and the apple orchard all in the same visit.

German Season: Oktoberfest + Germanfest

Germanfest Picnic — Dayton, Ohio

August 14–16, 2026

Dayton kicks off the German festival season every August with Germanfest — and as someone who spent six years living in Germany, I have a lot of feelings about a good German festival. Real German food, great beer, live music, and a community that genuinely leans into the Gemütlichkeit energy that makes these events so special.

Three days in August, right in our backyard. This is always worth clearing the calendar for.

August 14–16, 2026 Dayton, Ohio

Schmidt’s Columbus Oktoberfest — Columbus, Ohio

September 11–13, 2026

Schmidt’s has been a Columbus institution for 140 years — and their Oktoberfest at the Ohio Expo Center is one of the biggest German festivals in the Midwest.

Three stages of German music and polka dancing. A Marktplatz with 100+ vendors. Beer halls, a wine garden, and the famous Schmidt’s menu — bratwursts, Bahama Mamas, German potato salad, sauerkraut balls, deep fried Reubens on a stick, and the legendary Jumbo Cream Puffs that people drive from hours away just to eat.

Kids have the Kinderplatz with bounce rides, crafts, and face painting. And this year there’s a special Sunday Family Funday on September 13 featuring character appearances from Bluey, Blippi, Sponge Bob, Paw Patrol, and more.

As someone who’s been to actual Oktoberfest in Germany — this one genuinely captures the spirit of it. The cream puffs alone are worth the drive.

October: The Month We’ve All Been Waiting For

Ohio Sauerkraut Festival — Waynesville, Ohio

October 10–11, 2026

The one, the only, the most uniquely Ohio festival in existence.

460+ craft vendors, nearly 60 food items all featuring sauerkraut in some form — Reubens, sauerkraut pizza, sauerkraut burritos, sauerkraut mac and cheese, sauerkraut fudge (yes, really, try it) — live entertainment, and the full fall atmosphere of Waynesville’s beautiful downtown.

This festival draws hundreds of thousands of visitors every year for a very good reason. It’s joyful, it’s community-driven, and it’s completely one of a kind.

Conner Prairie Headless Horseman Festival — Fishers, Indiana

October 1–25, 2026 (Thursdays–Sundays)

A little further but absolutely worth the drive.

We went last year and I’ve been talking about it ever since. Over 40 years of fall tradition at Conner Prairie — a 13.6-acre corn maze, a haunted Trail of Terror, the Sleepy Hollow one-man show, a hayride through the dark, axe throwing, a barrel train through the pumpkin patch, and the famous Headless Horseman himself riding through in the evening.

It’s family-friendly without being low-energy — the atmosphere after dark is genuinely thrilling and the caramel apples from the Apple Store are something I’ve been thinking about since October 2025.

Circleville Pumpkin Show — Circleville, Ohio

October 21–24, 2026

“The Greatest Free Show on Earth” — and they mean it.

The Circleville Pumpkin Show has been running since 1903 and draws over 400,000 visitors to a small Pickaway County town every October. Four days of parades (seven of them total, including the Pumpkin Parade, Pet Parade, and Baby Parade), the world’s largest pumpkin pie, a pumpkin toss, pie-eating competition, hog calling, egg toss, pumpkin carving, 400+ food booths, arts and crafts, and every pumpkin-flavored food you can imagine.

Oh — and admission is completely free.

You’ll recognize Circleville before you even see the signs because the water tower is painted like a pumpkin, stem and all. It’s that kind of town in October.

Schappacher Farms — Wilmington, Ohio
October 2026, open daily 10am–6pm

This family-owned farm on 50 acres in Wilmington is exactly the kind of hidden gem the Ohio Hidden Gems group exists to share. Six pumpkin patches with a huge variety of specialty pumpkins, gourds, and squash. Free hayrides on weekends. A corn maze, a petting pen, fresh apple cider, hand-dipped caramel apples, and mini apple spice donuts. Oh — and a barn built in the mid-1800s that’s worth seeing on its own.

Hidden Valley Orchards — Lebanon, Ohio

Late August through Fall Season

Apple picking, fresh cider, 60+ years of Ohio farm history, and the most beautiful apple-picking atmosphere in the Miami Valley. Free farm entry — you just pay for what you pick.

The fall season at Hidden Valley is genuinely one of my favorite annual traditions — the smell of the cidery, the rows of apple trees, the whole farm in harvest season. Pure Ohio fall. (Read our Lebanon guide — coming soon)

The Bonus: A Little Further But Worth Every Mile

Fleur de Flea Vintage Urban Market — Louisville, Kentucky

September 5, 2026

Martha Stewart recognized it as one of the top outdoor vintage markets in the country — and once you’ve been, you’ll understand exactly why.

Fleur de Flea takes place twice a year on the Louisville Waterfront Plaza right along the Ohio River. Over 200 curated vendors selling antiques, vintage clothing, vinyl, collectibles, repurposed furniture, handmade goods, and the kind of finds that don’t exist anywhere else. Food trucks, pop-up bars, DJs, and the gorgeous river backdrop make it a full afternoon out — not just a shopping trip.

Tips for Making the Most of Ohio Fall Season

Start planning now. The best fall weekends in Ohio fill up fast — Sauerkraut Festival and Circleville Pumpkin Show especially draw massive crowds and nearby hotels book out weeks ahead.

Check dates early. Several of these events have specific weekend dates that vary year to year. Bookmark the official websites and check before you build your calendar.

Combine events into day trips. The Sauerkraut Festival pairs perfectly with a Waynesville antique morning. Circleville is a short drive from Columbus German Village. Schmidt’s Oktoberfest pairs with a German Village afternoon. The whole fall season is one big connected itinerary if you plan it right.

Book Conner Prairie early. Hayride slots sell out weeks in advance for October dates. Don’t wait.

We have the most uniquely Midwestern festival season of anywhere I’ve ever traveled — and I’ve been to 27 countries. A sauerkraut festival that draws half a million people. A pumpkin show that’s been running since 1903. A German festival in Columbus with Jumbo Cream Puffs and a Kinderplatz. A vintage market on the Louisville waterfront that Martha Stewart calls one of the best in the country.

Fall here is something special. And it’s almost here.
